Hi there. Welcome to Disability Justice Lens.
Disability Equity and Inclusion Training for the Screen Industry.
Do you love working in the screen industry?
Like you, we’re deeply committed to our sector. It’s full of innovative, enthusiastic people creating amazing things. But there’s a big issue that continues to affect a lot of us. Ableism.
Currently, the screen industry is full of inequity. Collectively, we continue to discriminate against many of our Disabled peers. For too long, disability equity and inclusion has been lumped in the “too hard” basket.
We know that Disabled screen workers are a lot more than just Disabled. We’re a diverse bunch of talent. We just work differently.
When was the last time you connected with an authentic, nuanced Disabled character on screen?
Have you noticed that paid opportunities for Disabled people in the screen industry are still as rare as hens’ teeth? Or that access is still an afterthought, and a lot of the work we do is inaccessible?
If you are someone who identifies as Disabled… no doubt you have. However, if you’re not Disabled yet, you may not be aware of just how dire the situation is.
Let us tell you, there are lot of barriers for Disabled folks in the screen industry. The vast majority of these are our intangible, negative attitudes.
According to the latest research, disability discrimination and prejudice are rife.
The good news is, there is a light at the end of the tunnel, if we want it. Being inclusive is a choice.
